The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is proposing a 'road diet' or reduction in the number of motor vehicle lanes on Stone Way North between North 34th Street and North 50th Street to improve safety at marked crosswalks. If a road diet is not implemented, the four marked crosswalks at North 38th Street, North 41st Street, North 47th Street, and North 48th Street will be removed. Consistent with the Wallingford Neighborhood Plan, SDOT has proposed changing Stone Way North from the current four lane configuration to a three lane configuration, two travel lanes and a center left turn lane, with parking and striped bicycle lanes on both sides of the street. These changes benefit all users of Stone Way. Dangerous weaving is prevented, smoothing the flow of traffic, and left turns are both easier and safer. Based on other similar conversions, business access is improved. But most importantly, pedestrian safety is greatly improved. Many may recall the terrible 2005 accident when a student crossing Stone Way North at the North 41st Street crosswalk was seriously injured. The driver in the curb lane stopped, but the driver in the inside lane did not, striking the student. This kind of accident is highly unlikely in a three lane configuration. Please come to the Open House to support the implementation of our Neighborhood Plan and help make Wallingford a better and safer place.
